Apply by Oct. 16 for drinking fountain grant
The deadline for schools to apply for the “Water’s Cool at School” grant has been extended through Monday, Oct. 16.
MESSA and the Delta Dental Foundation will aid in replacing old drinking fountains and installing new water filling stations to schools across Michigan that apply and are selected for the program. The program is designed to ensure children drink enough water during the school day and avoid sugar-sweetened beverages.
MESSA members interested in applying on behalf of their building should visit messa.org/wateratschool and submit an application by Oct. 16.
More than 20 selected schools will have older drinking fountains replaced with new Elkay water fountain/bottle filling stations installed by Oak Park-based Balfrey & Johnston. In addition, selected schools will receive reusable water bottles for students and staff.

No cost for preventive mammograms
and breast exams
October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, and it’s a good time for women over 40 to schedule a mammogram.
Early detection is critical to surviving breast cancer. The Mayo Clinic recommends that women 40 and older get a mammogram every year. In addition, state health officials recommend women ages 20 and older get a clinical breast exam at least every three years.
MESSA members and their dependents don’t have to pay a dime out of pocket to receive a breast exam from an in-network provider as part of their free annual health maintenance exam.
In addition, MESSA covers preventive and medically necessary mammography, at no cost to the member if performed by an in-network provider. Traditional 2-D mammography is covered, as well as digital breast tomosynthesis, also known as 3-D mammography. A 3-D mammogram is becoming a best practice in women’s health for breast cancer-detecting technology.
Additional mammograms are subject to your plan’s deductible.
In the event of a cancer diagnosis, MESSA helps members address their challenges. In addition to excellent coverage for cancer-related treatment, prescriptions and prosthetics, MESSA’s Medical Case Management program can provide personal support from a registered nurse. MESSA members can enroll in the program by calling 800.441.4626 during normal business hours.
